That character above is Devil-Zukin, one of the many dancing characters from the various DDR games. She has always been associated with Oni Mode (also called, in less-cool fashion, "Challenge Mode") so it seemed appropriate to put the picture here. If you read the Introduction page, perhaps you'll recall me saying that Oni and Non-Stop Modes are somewhat different from the Standard game mode. Rather than being difficulties in and of themselves, these modes comprise instead courses made up of the usual songs, played consecutively with no stops between them. Non-Stop Mode is essentially the same as the Standard Mode, only you lose more of the dance gauge bar for each missed step as you progress further along the song course. Oni Mode is much, MUCH more difficult; the player receives a life bar with 4 ticks at the beginning of the course, and any step that does not result in a Perfect or Great decreases one of them (freeze note OKs count too). Lose all four and you're out, and you only get 1-3 bars back between each passed song. In other words, there's no room for error. While Non-Stop Mode is entertaining, Oni Mode has much more replay value due to the extreme difficulty and the fact that even the easiest songs suddenly become interesting and challenging again where you can only miss 4 of the notes! "Oni" means "Devil" or "Demon" in Japanese, and it lives up to the title.
A brief word of explanation is in order before commencing with this section. When playing different DDR songs, I invariably will turn on the 1.5x speed mod for virtually every song. This spaces out the notes, making them easier for me to read. The problem with Oni Mode, however, is that the player is not allowed to use any mods whatsoever on the courses - including speed mods. For the longest time, this prevented me from playing any of the Oni courses (I am extremely bad at reading the default 1x scroll speed!) However, I eventually found out that it is possible to create Custom Oni courses in which mods can be used. Therefore, what I've done is to re-create all of the actual Oni courses as custom courses, allowing me to turn on the 1.5x speed mod. This doesn't have much of an effect on most courses, but some (Road of Slow, for example) do become quite a bit easier. In any case, for honesty's sake I wanted to make that disclosure up front. The one exception is DDRMax USA; all of those results were done on the default 1x.

DDR Extreme (Japan)
DDR Extreme scores the Oni courses somewhat differently. Instead of giving the score as a percentage, each steps earns points towards a total. The newly introduced Marvelous step is worth 3 points, Perfects are 2, Greats are 1, OKs for held freezes are 3, and anything else is worth 0 (but you won't be getting many zeros or you'll be out real fast!) Since Marvelouses are much harder to get than Perfects, it's nearly impossible to get a score even close to the maximum. I'm listing both the score in points and the corresponding percentage (as it would be in DDRMax2).
